Biography
Edmund Nankivell b. November 1936 is a qualified engineer with a
background in archaeology including Industrial Archaeology. He bought
his first Jupiter in 1967. In 1969 he bought a coachbuilt
special-bodied Jupiter, put it on the road in 1971, and it has been on
the road ever since. It was his family’s second car from 1971 to 1991
and also used for touring to France, Belgium and Germany covering more
than 100,000 miles all told.
Soon after purchase I asked myself the question – why do special-bodied
Jupiters exist? Also, was the Jupiter competition history as good as
people said?
These questions were answered by a very lengthy, detailed and profound
investigation of recorded material, and importantly interviews of
ex-employees of the Jowett company, first and early owners of Jupiters
and former racing and rally drivers who had used Jupiters and Javelins
in competition.
Edmund also sought to explore the context of the Jupiter with
respect to other cars that were contemporary with it.
So much high class material was collected that Edmund felt there must be
a book there, and in fact four books have been produced by him on the
subject of the Jowett company and the Jowett Jupiter. His
archaeological background ensured he did not ever jump to seemingly
obvious conclusions and no material has emerged to substantially
contradict anything in his books.
