When Trumph rose from the ashes in the 1990s, the management had one aim: re-establish a reputation for reliable production machinery and no racing! But it didn't take long for the Triumph Super III motor derived from the Trident to be developed (with sem-works support) for BEARS competition. Quite rightly, remembering the 750cc triples successes of the 1970s, before the roof fell in. The Trident has held its own in road tests against the likes of the BMW R100R, just as the T160 had captured the imagination of an earlier generation. A transverse three is, let's face it, an oddity--but it worked once, and now the Hinckley designers have made it work again, some would say against all the odds.
