Cook Out Summer Shootout – Round 1 Practice Day: What It's Really Like to Race a Legend Car with INEX

por Chad Byrum en June 05, 2026

Legend Car Racing: My Return to the Cook Out Summer Shootout Practice Day at Charlotte Motor Speedway

There comes a moment in racing when all the preparation, all the YouTube videos, all the advice from experienced drivers, and all the bench racing in the garage suddenly stop mattering.

You're strapped into the car. The engine is running. Your visor is down. The track worker points you toward pit exit.

And then reality hits.

The track suddenly feels smaller. The corners feel tighter. The walls feel closer.

If you've ever raced a car, ridden a motorcycle on a track, or competed in any motorsport, you know exactly what I'm talking about.

That feeling is what makes the Cook Out Summer Shootout at Charlotte Motor Speedway such an incredible place to learn. It doesn't care about excuses. It doesn't care about your plans. It simply rewards drivers who put in the work.

And this year, I showed up with one goal:

Get better.

Last Year Was Baptism by Fire

If you've followed my racing journey on the Midlife Classic Cars YouTube channel, you probably remember last season.

I bought my INEX Legend Car only a few weeks before the Summer Shootout started.

Looking back, that probably wasn't the smartest plan.

Instead of spending weeks testing, learning the car, and building confidence, I basically got tossed into race conditions and told to figure it out as I went.

There were plenty of mistakes. Missed shifts. Stalls. Locking up brakes. Learning where the racing line actually was. Trying to understand what the car wanted versus what I thought it should do.

It was humbling.

But it was also one of the most fun things I've ever done.

This year I promised myself things would be different.

That meant showing up for Round 1 Practice Day and focusing on something racers never seem to get enough of:

Seat time.

Why Practice Matters More Than Most People Realize

Practice isn't glamorous.

Nobody hangs trophies for practice laps. Nobody remembers who was fastest during a test session.

But when you're learning how to drive a Legend Car, practice might be the most valuable thing you can buy.

These cars are incredibly rewarding when you get them right, but they're not exactly forgiving.

The clutch is heavy. The cockpit is tight. The cars react quickly. And every mistake gets magnified when you're trying to carry speed through the corners.

A day of uninterrupted laps allows you to build something that's impossible to learn from watching videos:

Muscle memory.

The more laps you run, the less you're thinking and the more you're reacting.

That's where progress starts happening.

Why I Love the INEX Racing Community

One thing that continues to impress me about Legend Car Racing is the people.

I've spent time around a lot of different automotive hobbies over the years. Classic cars. Muscle cars. Car shows. Road racing. Drag racing.

The INEX community is special.

During practice I managed to stall the car in pit lane.

Not exactly my proudest moment.

Almost immediately another driver came over to check on me and see if I needed help.

No attitude. No jokes. No ego.

Just one racer helping another racer.

That's something I've seen repeatedly in this paddock.

Experienced racers help new racers. Drivers share advice. People genuinely want to see others improve.

In today's world that's becoming increasingly rare, and it's one of the reasons I keep coming back.

Race Driven Performance Helped Me Find Speed

One of the biggest advantages I have is working with Race Driven Performance.

Every time I came off the track, they were immediately looking over the car and helping me understand what I was feeling behind the wheel.

We talked about brake bias. Corner entry. Weight transfer. Driving lines.

Then we had a conversation that completely changed my day.

They explained how I could use the brakes not only to slow the car but to help rotate it through the corner.

That sounds simple.

It isn't.

Once I started understanding that concept, everything began to click.

The car started turning better. My confidence increased. The laps became smoother.

Instead of feeling like I was surviving the corners, I started feeling like I was actually driving them.

If you've ever wondered whether having a good team matters in racing, watch the video.

You'll get your answer.

The Real Story Isn't the Fast Laps

One thing I've always tried to do on the Midlife Classic Cars YouTube channel is show the whole journey.

Not just the victories. Not just the highlights.

The mistakes too.

In this video you'll see:

  • Getting black flagged because of a timing and registration issue
  • Locking up the front brakes
  • Running wide in corners
  • Learning where I'm giving away speed
  • Figuring out how to rotate the car better
  • Working through one of the stiffest clutches I've ever used

That's real racing.

Most drivers don't magically become fast.

They improve one mistake at a time.

That's exactly what's happening here.

Compared to where I was during my first Summer Shootout appearance, the progress is obvious.

Lap times are improving. Confidence is improving. The car is doing more of what I ask it to do.

And honestly, that's what keeps me coming back.
